Microsoft Fixes Windows 11 Screenshot Privacy Bug: Keep Your Data Secure

by admin

Microsoft has quickly released two special security updates for its Windows 10 and 11 screenshot editing apps. This happened after an old software engineer, Christopher Blume, found a potential security issue called “aCropalypse”. A few days after the discovery was made, Microsoft started testing a fix for it.

This Friday, Microsoft released new updates for both Windows 11’s Snipping Tool and Windows 10’s Snip & Sketch app. To get the new patches, open the Microsoft Store on your computer then click “Library” and “Get Updates”. Microsoft suggests everybody install these updates.

The aCropalypse flaw was first found on Pixel phones and then fixed by Google in an Android software update from March. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool also had a problem because it didn’t erase the data from cut-up PNG files well enough. But, not all PNG images were affected so hackers couldn’t get any sensitive information from these photos. As with Google’s Android patch, Microsoft’s solutions won’t help for images that have already been changed using its Snipping Tool before the fixes came out.
