The research team calls these adjustments “perturbations” – they are indiscernible to the human eye but machines can readily identify them. The “encoder” assault technique that introduces these peculiarities targets the AI model’s latent understanding of the image — the intricate mathematics that detail the position and color of every pixel in a picture — essentially obstructing the AI’s interpretation of the image. 

The more sophisticated and computationally demanding “diffusion” assault technique masks an image as a separate image from the AI’s perspective. It establishes a target image and optimizes the perturbations in its picture to mimic the target. Any edits that an AI attempts on these “immunized” images will be applied to the decoy “target” images, producing an unrealistic image. 

“”The encoder attack makes the AI believe that the input image (to be altered) is another image (such as a gray image),” Hadi Salman, MIT Ph.D. student and the paper’s lead author, explained to BuyTechBlog. “The diffusion attack, on the other hand, compels the diffusion model to perform edits directed at some target image (which could be a gray or random image).” The technique isn’t foolproof; malicious individuals could potentially reverse engineer the safeguarded image by adding digital noise or by cropping or flipping the photo.

“Creating a solid defense against unauthorized image manipulation necessitates a combined effort from model developers, social media platforms, and policymakers,” Salman stated in a press release. “Addressing this urgent issue is crucial today. While I’m happy to contribute to this solution, more work is required to make this protection effective. Companies that engineer these models must invest in constructing robust protections against the potential threats posed by these AI tools.”
