EV charging integration

Starting in 2024, Rivian will join GM and Ford in gaining access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, allowing R1T and R1S owners to utilize these charging stations with the help of an adapter. By spring of the following year, Rivian plans to offer this adapter to their customers. Additionally, beginning in 2025, Rivian will incorporate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge ports as the standard option in their R1 vehicles, as well as in the upcoming R2 platform.

This development means that Rivian owners will soon have access to over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers located across the United States and Canada, providing them with convenient battery top-up options. Rivian also intends to expand its Adventure Network of DC fast chargers as part of their ongoing efforts.

RJ Scaringe, the CEO of Rivian, expressed enthusiasm for the adoption of the North American Charging Standard, highlighting how it will allow their existing and future customers to leverage Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network while Rivian continues to expand its own charging infrastructure through the Rivian Adventure Network. Scaringe emphasized Rivian’s commitment to accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and expressed optimism about finding new ways to achieve this goal.

Tesla announced its plans to open source the North American Charging Standard last year, which has been gaining traction as a widely accepted EV charging standard in North America. Ford, GM, and now Rivian have embraced this standard, indicating a shift away from the Combined Charging System (CCS). Tesla emphasized the broader availability of the NACS due to the expansive Supercharger network, potentially pressuring other infrastructure providers like Electrify America and Chargepoint to adopt the NACS as well.
