Skullcandy, a brand recognized for its affordable wireless earphones such as the $20 Smokin’ Buds, is taking a step into the premium market with a fresh series of products. Dubbed as the Rail series, it introduces both ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) and non-ANC versions priced under $100, but boasts features often associated with more expensive wireless earbuds.
The premier model, the Rail ANC, comes equipped with adjustable 4-mic active noise cancellation and a “Stay-Aware” mode for heightened alertness in public spaces. It includes a “Smart Mic” feature to reduce background noise, enhancing the quality of your voice. It offers up to 10 hours of battery life, which reduces to seven hours with the ANC engaged, and an additional 25/20 hours (ANC off/on) with the charging case. Its resistance to sweat, water, and dust is assured, although an explicit IPX rating has not been provided.
Packed with numerous smart features, the Rail ANC allows for hands-free voice commands via its in-built device assistant, enabling users to switch on and adjust Stay-Aware mode, activate the device assistant, launch Spotify Tap, and more. It is designed to become smarter with usage, with updates being delivered over-the-air via the Skull-iQ app. The earbuds are equipped with Bluetooth 5.2, offering multipoint pairing, and allowing simultaneous connection with two devices, irrespective of the platform or manufacturer.
Skullcandy’s Rail ANC allows users to adapt the audio to their individual hearing capabilities through a real-time audio test, forming a personalized sound profile. It also comes with customizable EQ modes, and button functions can be personalized via the Skull-iQ app. An added convenience is the incorporation of Tile’s Finding technology, allowing users to locate a lost earbud using the Tile app.

The regular Rail variant, without ANC, offers slightly longer battery life, eight hours in the earbuds and 34 hours in the charging case. Ten minutes of charging will provide approximately two hours of playtime. The rest of the features align with the ANC model, and the two look identical. Both variants are designed for a “universally ergonomic fit,” achieved through the use of VR and other advanced design tools. The company, however, didn’t elaborate on sound quality.
The Rail and Rail ANC models (available in True Black and Bone for Rail, and in True Black for Rail ANC) can now be exclusively purchased on Skullcandy’s website for $80 and $100, respectively.
