Sneak Peek at ’33 Immortals’: Challenging a deity becomes a thrilling adventure with comrades

Have you ever grappled with the task of assembling a four-person team for Overwatch? Or wondered how to synchronize your gameplay with friends in Destiny 2?

Picture uniting 33 players for a thrilling 25-minute raid? That’s exactly what 33 Immortals proposes to do.

Drawing from the nostalgic animation styles of old-school cartoons and a pinch of Banner Saga, 33 Immortals is a massively expansive multiplayer roguelike action game viewed from the top-down perspective, created by the team behind Spiritfarer. Following this week’s Xbox Showcase at the Summer Game Fest, I, along with five other spirits, made an attempt to flee hell during a demo session.

The early version of the game showcased two character types: a swordsman capable of dealing significant damage at close range, and an archer able to launch up to three arrows before needing to replenish. I had the opportunity to play as the archer. Besides the basic attacks, I could press and hold the action button for a stronger, piercing shot. Interestingly, the archer retrieves his fired arrows when reloading, allowing strategic positioning to double the inflicted damage.

Characters are equipped with a dash move, and trigger buttons open your world map, emote wheel, and cooperative abilities. These co-op abilities change based on your character type and usually require meticulous planning for successful execution. For instance, the RB trigger unveils three circles on the ground, and two fellow immortals must activate the vacant circles to initiate the attack. As an archer, this triggers a rain of arrows, while for the swordsman, it initiates a healing spell with a wide range.

There are plenty of foes on the screen, especially in tougher portal dungeons. It’s immensely enjoyable to randomly spam attacks, aid your team in defeating mid-bosses, or eliminate easy targets from a distance before they strategize their offensive.

Though the sword and bow might seem restrictive, fear not. 33 Immortals will introduce a variety of character types for diversity. We anticipate seven different warriors corresponding to the seven deadly sins and seven heavenly virtues. The button configurations remain consistent across characters, simplifying the task of trying out different roles. To add some depth, players can collect in-game currency from defeated monsters to purchase healing items or trinkets that enhance attack speed, defense, and more.

Expect repetition. Each raid is designed to last about 25 minutes. Maintaining as many active (and online) players as possible is crucial to defeating the boss. More players expedite the process of reducing the health bar of larger foes since the game isn’t scaled based on the number of players. The more immortals, the better.

However, your fighter isn’t entirely immortal. After receiving too much damage, you’ll transform into a spectral spirit, unable to do anything except drift around until another raider resurrects you, a process that can be frustrating during tough battles. It’s more advantageous to fight strategically, heal your teammates, and avoid death.

33 Immortals takes inspiration from Dante’s Divine Comedy. You’re resisting God’s final verdict of your soul’s damnation, and God’s wrath takes a playful twist when you conquer one of his dungeons. As you exit the portal, the surrounding land is engulfed in divine fire, forcing you to evade both this and spawning foes until God cools off.

Although this was a preliminary demo, latency was an issue for my setup. However, the team has ample time for optimization and for providing demos outside of frenzied Xbox showcases. I am eager to play a roguelike as part of a horde, and I’m intrigued to learn about the other character types.

33 Immortals is scheduled to launch on Xbox Series X/S and PC in 2024.

Healing spell, dodging divine fire, collecting currency sounds a lot like Zelda mechanics, not complaining though, love it.
