SpaceX, the private space exploration company founded by Elon Musk, is making plans for a mission to the moon. A startup called Astrolab said they had signed an agreement with SpaceX to take part in a cargo flight that could happen as early as 2026. This would be the first commercial cargo mission from SpaceX to reach the moon’s surface! The CEO of Astrolab talked about how his company was just one of many who were taking part in this adventurous trip.

Astrolab is making a modified car that they hope can one day transport equipment, supplies, and people across the moon. The vehicle called Flexible Logistics and Exploration (FLEX) rover looks like a Jeep Wrangler and it’s slightly bigger than NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars. It has a robotic arm to help with things and can go up to 15 miles per hour. Plus, FLEX can carry two astronauts too!

When it arrives on the Moon, the Astrolab rover FLEX will be the biggest ever to drive around that surface. The Times newspaper reports customers are waiting to use FLEX during a mission in 2026. In the future, FLEX could help create a lasting human presence on both the Moon and Mars. According to Matthews, their dream is to have fleets of rovers located at each planet so they can spark an economy beyond Earth.
