Sony has just unveiled that their latest handheld gadget, the PlayStation Portal, is officially up for grabs in the pre-order game. Expected to make its grand entrance on November 15th, the company updated the info today, adding to the hype that started with last week’s initial announcement. But hold your horses—this device isn’t a stand-alone gaming powerhouse. You’ll need an existing PS5 and a rock-solid WiFi connection to jump in.
Billed as “your PS5’s handheld companion,” the PlayStation Portal boasts an eight-inch LCD screen that serves up 1080p visuals at a smooth 60 FPS. Plus, it comes with those snazzy haptic feedback features and adaptive triggers we’ve all come to love. Kris Holt of BuyTechBlog hit the nail on the head when he said it looks “somewhat like a tablet got cozy between two DualSense controller halves.”
Don’t get too starry-eyed, though. The PlayStation Portal isn’t equipped for cloud streaming via PlayStation Plus Premium or any comparable services. It’s also bereft of any native apps. Essentially, think of it as a glorified, WiFi-enabled remote control for your existing PS5. The silver lining? You can play from miles away, so long as your console is awake and alert back at your lair.
If you’re already mentally carving out space for this gadget in your life, you can only lock it down via pre-order directly through Sony. So, will this be the next piece in your gaming tech puzzle, or are you still on the fence? Either way, November 15 is just around the corner, folks. Mark those calendars!
